Class Action Lawsuit Against Apple for Shipping 2015 MacBook with Faulty Keyboards

At this point, it is no secret that the ‘butterfly’ keyboard used by Apple across its MacBook and MacBook Pro lineup is faulty. As service records have shown, the number of 2016 MacBook Pro units Apple received for keyboard repairs was well over 2x times higher than the previous model featuring the older “scissor” mechanism.

Well, the high failure rate of the new butterfly keyboard has led Apple to be a subject of a class action lawsuit. Thousands of MacBook and MacBook Pro owners have lodged a complaint in the Northern District Court of California for the butterfly keyboard failing in their 2015 or 2016 MacBook or MacBook Pro. These keyboards usually fail due to dust or debris getting between the keys which end up wreaking havoc with their functionality. Worse, the only way to fix the issue is to replace the entire keyboard — even for one faulty key — which can be an expensive process if a MacBook or MacBook Pro is out of warranty.

In the complaint, the owners say that Apple “fails to disclose that the MacBook is defective, including when consumers bring their failed laptops into the ‘Genius Bar’ at Apple stores to request technical support.”

Some plaintiffs also allege that Apple might repair or replace the keyboard on their MacBook while it is in warranty, but if it fails for the same reason again after the warranty is over, they have been asked to shell out $400 to $700 to repair it. Others, however, have experienced the company denying repairs on their MacBook even when it was under warranty.

The plaintiffs in the class action lawsuit are seeking damages and legal fees along with replacing the defective unit or refunding the amount paid for it. They also want that Apple publicly discloses the faulty nature of the butterfly keyboard.

Our Take

Until and unless Apple loses this lawsuit, it is unlikely to publicly accept that the first-generation butterfly keyboards used in its 2015 MacBook and 2016 MacBook Pro lineup is faulty. It does know that they are faulty though as it has replaced them with the second-generation butterfly mechanism in its 2017 MacBook lineup and they have turned out to be more reliable than their predecessor.
