Pocket Casts is widely believed to be one of the best podcast listening application for both Android and iOS. The app is now being acquired by a group of companies which includes NPR, WNYC Studios, WBEZ Chicago, and This American Life. They are among the top four podcast products so Pocket Casts is definitely going into the right hands.

Owen Grover will serve as the CEO of Pocket Casts. He was previously the Executive Vice President and General Manager at iHeartRadio. Founders of Pocket Casts, Philip Simpson and Russell Ivanovic, will continue to be in leadership roles as the company will operate in a joint venture, with the existing staff and developer team also being intact.

“As the leading producers of podcasts in a rapidly growing market, we’re linking arms to embrace new opportunities for the distribution of audio and the engagement of a new generation of listeners,” said Jarl Mohn, President and CEO, NPR. “Pocket Casts is a terrific app and will be a great complement to NPR One, the NPR app and the other outstanding products in public radio’s portfolio of innovation. We want to continue serving and delighting its large and passionate audience through wide access to the world of powerful podcasts, from public radio and beyond.”

No further details were provided about the acquisition including the price paid. Nonetheless, co-founder Russell Ivanovic told The Verge that the acquisition is less about the price and more about the organizations and their nature.

“We have had acquisition offers in the past,” Ivanovic told The Verge by email. “We turned them down because the unique thing about this opportunity is the mission driven nature of these organizations. They want what’s best for the podcasting space, they want to build open systems that everyone can use.”

If you are a Pocket Casts user, this is definitely a good news for you as the app is bound to improve further at a rapid pace post the acquisition.
